*PRIVATE STUDIO POLICY*

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY & EXPECTATIONS:

I believe that each student is unique and learns differently. We all come from different places and have different musical experiences. Instead of using a set “method” for teaching all of my students, I use a variety of different methods that I can tailor to each student individually that utilizes the many different ways that people can learn. I use a creative combination of ear training, sight-reading, rhythmic studies, call & response, imitation, listening, and improvisation in addition to more standard methods of study such as etudes, exercises, scale studies, literature (solo and orchestral) and duets. For Jazz study, I incorporate transcription, learning tunes, memorization, heavy listening, along with jazz theory and technique books from various sources.

My main goal as a teacher is to help my students become musically independent and confident. I will help each student develop a personalized practice routine and set realistic goals. I will help each student get comfortable with his/her instrument and with the language of music. Playing music should be a positive experience that helps the student grow both musically and personally. I want to help my students motivate themselves to want to practice and learn as much as they can about music.

Each student comes with his or her own strengths, weaknesses and preconceived notions. As a teacher, I know that I can learn just as much from my students as they can learn from me. We have to all be open to the process and be willing to learn. I want each student to not only be successful, but also discover the joy that is making music. Music is FUN. However, in order for it to be fun, it requires a large amount of hard work and dedication. Oh and, of course, Practice.

My students are expected to:

  • Maintain a regular practice routine which consists of practicing at least 30 minutes a day 6 days a week.
  • Use a metronome during every session.
  • Have a tuner available to use on a regular basis.
  • Saxophone and clarinet players need to have at least 4 extra reeds in their case at all times.
  • Bring all needed materials to every lesson. This includes assignment journal, manuscript paper, assigned music, music from school, audition materials, fun music you would like to learn, etc.
  • Ask questions!
  • Fix any instrument repair problems as soon as possible. It's no fun to play on a horn that's not working right.
  • Arrive to lessons on time. Lessons cannot be extended due to tardiness.
  • Communicate goals with both me and your parents.
  • Come to me with any concerns, problems, or questions as soon as they arise. Feel free to call or e-mail me during the week.
